Real People: A Transitory Exhibition of Human Beings

Williamson Gallery, Spring 2008

Objects enter galleries and museums in a variety of ways to be added to the collection already stored within; cupboards, shelves, boxes, drawers - all containers for valuable and valued treasures which reflect a local, national or international importance. Objects are identified, documented, catalogued, photographed, accessioned to formally accept them into the collection.

This project explores this process of accessioning other arrivals into the same space: people, human beings, visitors, viewers, learners. Normally a simple click of a counter or a tick on a page notes their entry into the building. Here they are documented as an object would be, using an accession card specifically designed to record 'Real People'. Visitors carry a label denoting their reference number and become part of a transitory exhibition of people.

So, they wandered in purposeful, aimless, determined, distracted. . . some people chose the 19th March, some 10th April to visit the Williamson Gallery in Birkenhead. With wide ranging reasons, they came in search of distraction, to fill time after a cancelled activity, to see a particular picture, or part of the exhibition, or to just see what was on.

Amidst the relentless peaceful tick-tock of the Time exhibition of clocks, the foyer sat quiet and calm. Footsteps broke open the air of graceful importance. The grandeur formally set the scene for cultural awareness, an education into the delights of others skill, the collections and the collectables, the long stored and long overlooked. Feet moved across the marble and herringbone of the wooden floors in eager anticipation of the delights within.
