I have developed and managed this project, working with 2 schools and 2 artists to design and create textile embellishments that reflect the history of the local shops. The project is to support the village in it's re-application for Purple Flag status 2014.
Sharing our History is a creative heritage project which will engage children from 2 local primary schools in an exciting summer term art project to decorate the purple flags. To begin we will research the history of Stockton Heath's shops and businesses that fly a purple flag, finding out what each place offers now, but equally as importantly, discovering the earlier trading history of each building too. Once the research is complete the children will be getting their creative skills and ideas, working with local artists, to design and create images in fabric that tell the story of those shops and businesses up to the present day.
Stockton Heath is a place with unique title; the first village to be awarded the prestigious Purple Flag Award in the whole of the UK. Think Blue Flag beaches and Green Flag parks; Purple Flags are awarded to places which are well managed and provide a safe visitor experience, particularly from early evening onwards.
Purple flags fly in the village during the autumn and 2013 will be no exception; the flags will fly from September.
